About Us
Powered by volunteers, fueled by passion, run on a shoestring.
We believe theatre should be accessible, joyful, and welcoming to everyone. That’s why we offer the lowest ticket prices in the area, keep our productions volunteer-driven, and welcome artists of all ages, experience levels, and backgrounds to join the magic.

We do theatre because we love it, and we love the people we do it with. From actors and ushers to set painters and sound board operators, Shoestring Theatre thrives on collaboration, creativity, and heart.

Our stage is built on community - literally!

Our Story

Shoestring Theatre has been bringing the joy of live theater to West Volusia since 1950. What started as a ragtag group of volunteers in a Navy mess hall has grown into one of Central Florida’s longest-running community theaters—still proudly operated on a shoestring budget.
Today, Shoestring Theatre lives in a 100-year-old former schoolhouse in Lake Helen, built in 1917 and used as a four-room school until 1967. The building was transformed into a working theatre by volunteers who salvaged materials, built the stage, and installed theater seats donated from venues across the region. (If you look closely, you can still see the original chalkboards on either side of the stage!)
Our story continues into the present, as our 100-year building and 75-year company are lovingly carried forward by today's volunteers.
